CMS students: Safer than peers

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco than their peers nationally, according to results of a study released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 2007 National Youth Risk Behavior Study showed 15 percent of CMS students said they had smoked cigarettes in the last 30 days, compared to 20 percent nationally. The same study showed 34 percent of CMS students reported having at least one drink of alcohol in the previous 30 days, which was below the 45 percent national figure. And 16 percent of CMS students reported a binge drinking episode, compared to 26 percent nationally. When it came to driving after drinking, seven percent of CMS students said they had done so.
